It’s 3 o’clock and you’re struggling to keep your eyes open at work – again! This is even after you went to bed early last night. Chronic fatigue is affecting your productivity during the day, and all you want to do is go home and take a nap. Did you know that sleep apnea could be the culprit of your fatigue? Dr. Jay A. Nelson can help with sleep apnea treatment in Wesley Chapel!
What is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea is a dangerous sleep disorder that occurs when you actually stop breathing during the night, which causes your body to wake up. The most common form of sleep apnea is caused by an obstructed airway. When you can’t breathe freely at night, the lack of oxygen signals your brain to wake up.
Even though you may be waking up multiple, even hundreds of times per night in some cases, it’s likely you don’t even realize that it’s happening. Your body knows though, and the lack of rest and rejuvenation during the night takes a toll on your health and ability to concentrate and focus during the day.
Effectively Treating Sleep Apnea
While your physician may recommend CPAP, or continuous positive airway pressure therapy for sleep apnea, many patients aren’t successful with this treatment for a number of reasons such as:
- It requires wearing a mask over your face at night while you sleep, which can feel uncomfortable or claustrophobic to some patients.
- The CPAP machine is loud and hard to sleep with.
- It’s hard to travel with full CPAP gear.
Dr. Nelson recently became an American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine (ABDSM) Diplomate, which means that he has extensive training in effectively treating sleep apnea with alternative solutions such as oral appliance therapy. This unique status and advanced knowledge of sleep apnea means that you’ll receive the most effective treatment solutions when you choose Dr. Nelson for your care.
Dr. Nelson will create a customized oral appliance that is designed to slightly reposition your jaw during sleep, which opens your airways for free breathing. An oral appliance is often enough to treat mild to moderate cases of sleep apnea without having to rely on CPAP therapy. It can also be helpful for snoring treatment in Wesley Chapel.
For more severe conditions, Dr. Nelson is happy to partner with your physician as an oral appliance can often work in conjunction with the CPAP for the most effective treatment.
